Tour 10:
Ancient Ostia |
Something really special to crown your roman holidays. Not everybody y realizes that, at only 30' from the Capital, an extraordinary archeological site, as important and exciting as Pompeii, awaits us: the impressive excavations of Ancient Ostia. This was the city- harbor founded by ancient Romans, at the mouth of the Tiber, and which later was hidden by floods and oblivion up to our days. Its remnants are thus better preserved than in Rome itself and offer us an extraordinary testimonial of roman civilization along its whole evolution. By walking through the ancient roads we will plunge straight into the past everyday's life of a refined and dynamic city where the cult for arts and pleasures was sovereign. You will admire in fact the ruins of majestic public buildings, like temples, theatres, for a or basilicas as well as of the private ones, like houses, shops, inns, workshops etc., ranging from the sumptuous to the humblest. Particularly attractive are the famous mosaics of the 12 thermal baths and of the various harbor offices (Corporations Square). A further bonus: archeology spared the whole area from modern artifacts turning it into a delicious natural oasis, constantly cooled by healthy sea breezes.

Tour C1:
The Art Gallery - the Park - Pincio's Terrace - the Spanish Steps |
A “must“ in Rome - apart from the usual tours - is Villa Borghese, in itself worth a trip to Italy. The Borghese Gallery , was renowned for centuries as “the sovereign of all private art collections“ and is nowadays open to the selective tourist (without the usual crowds and endless waiting in line). Our Tour starts at the Gallery, with an expert and brilliant guide which is imperative to fully enjoy the masterpieces that the Borgheses (Pope Paul V belonged to that family)have amassed in their tasteful summer residence since 1600. Bernini as a sculptor, Raphael, Caravaggio, Tiziano, Domenichino, Correggio , are just some of the highlights of an incredible wealth of art, ranging from ancient Rome up to the Neoclassical style, the latter epitomized by Canova's famous nude of Paolina Bonaparte .The second part of the guided Tour will be outdoors, through the delightful Borghese Park , the Pincio Terrazza with its breath-taking view, the panoramic Pincio promenade , the Spanish Steps down to Piazza di Spagna , the heart of a paradise for fashion conscious shoppers and selective gourmets. From this central point most of the hotels are at walking distance or easily reachable. Our guide will be at disposal for directions or any advice.
